When I see suggestions out there to hide presents in my underwear drawer, I have to laugh. People, underwear is no deterrent for a determined child! I guess I feel like that because, I was one of those kids that went on a scavenger hunt during the holidays to locate my presents. Actually, there were several of us, and not only did we search for the gifts, but if we found them, we would very carefully open them. Then, rewrap them to hide the evidence. Based on my experience, I can tell you that the first place that a kid is going to look is in your bedroom. So, if you need the best places to hide Christmas gifts that actually work, then read on.

Best Places to Hide Christmas Gifts that Actually Work…

Above the Kitchen Cabinets:

My current hiding spot is above the kitchen cabinets. I have been using this one for several years now, and no one has figured it out. Now, you may have read in other articles that hiding gifts on top of a wardrobe is a good location. Well, maybe if your kids are under the age of five. But, if you have a determined and crafty kid, this may be one of the first places that they look. So, considered the possibility of hiding things on top of the kitchen cabinets.

There is normally a few inches of space between the top shelf and the top edge of a cabinet box. If you have crown molding, then that should add 3-4 inches more. I know for a fact that a gaming system can be hidden quite well in this location. But, you can’t stick anything too big up there. You need to make sure it isn’t visible from a distance.

Beneath the Bottom of Chairs:

One place that you may not even know exists is the space beneath your arm chairs and/or ottomans. Some chairs have a zippered dust cover on the bottom of them. This is a great spot for tucking light weight items like video games or jewelry. Not all of them will have this feature, but if you look, the odds are that you will find at least one chair in your house that does.

In the Luggage:

One place that I have seen suggested elsewhere that actually does work is inside a suitcase. I will say however that your odds of discovery increase with age. In addition, you don’t want to leave the suitcase in a location that may catch attention, like the middle of your closet. Instead, tuck the suitcase away in a location that makes it less likely to be noticed.

In Their Own Closet:

I have found that one of the best places to hide Christmas gifts from older kids is in their own closets. That’s right! Hide it in their own closets. When kids go on the hunt for presents, they never look in their own room. You can take advantage of that.

I am very big on keeping clothes organized. I keep a Goodwill box on the top shelf of my son’s closet. About twice a year, I pull it down so that my son can add his outgrown clothing to it. He has never even thought that there was the remotest possibility that anything else was in that box.

In Your Trunk

If you are really concerned about your gifts being found, you can aways take them with you wherever you go. Hide them in the trunk of your car. If you have an SUV, this may not work, because the trunk is open for viewing. However, you can use the wheel well for a few smaller gifts.

False Bottom Drawer:

Another great spot is under a false bottom drawer. If you don’t have one, you can make one easily with my false bottom drawer DIY. The amount and size of what can be hidden will depending on how deep you set the space.

At your Office:

If you have room in your office drawers, leave it at work. Some offices even offer storage rooms or locker space where you can hide gifts.

Someone Else’s House:

If you have a gift that can’t be hidden at your house, and you can’t leave it at work, consider a neighbor or family member’s house. Just make sure that you retrieve your gifts at least a few days before Christmas, so that you don’t run the risk of something happening to prevent your access.
